Receptor Glossary
Affinity: The strength of the relation between a ligand and a receptor.
Agonist: A compound that binds to a receptor to generate a complex
which causes a full pharmacological response, specifically to the nature of the
receptor involved.
Antagonist: A compound that binds to a receptor to generate a complex
which does not cause any response, as if the receptor was unoccupied.
Ligand: A molecule that binds to a receptor.
Receptor: A molecule inside or on the membrane of a cell that recognizes
and binds to a particular substance and leads to a certain physiologic effect
in the cell.
