Receptor Glossary

Affinity: The strength of the relation between a ligand and a receptor.

Agonist: A compound that binds to a receptor to generate a complex which causes a full pharmacological response, specifically to the nature of the receptor involved.

Antagonist: A compound that binds to a receptor to generate a complex which does not cause any response, as if the receptor was unoccupied.

Ligand: A molecule that binds to a receptor.

Receptor: A molecule inside or on the membrane of a cell that recognizes and binds to a particular substance and leads to a certain physiologic effect in the cell.
